Gout is not usually preventable through lifestyle changes alone. Many people with gout need medicines to get their gout under control. You may be able to decrease the number of attacks you have by changing elements of your lifestyle. Consider doing the following to prevent future gout attacks:

 

  • Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. If you have fluid restrictions because of kidney disease, talk to your doctor or dietitian about managing your fluids and gout.
  • Take your gout medicines exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Cut out foods that are high in purines.
  • Avoid sugary drinks (like soda), sugary foods, and foods with high-fructose corn syrup.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, especially beer.
  • Follow a healthy eating plan rich with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you have particular food limitations or restrictions because of kidney disease, talk to your doctor or dietitian about addressing gout through nutritional choices. 
  • Keep a healthy weight.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week to stay physically fit.
