Michiganders, help remove roadblocks to living organ donation

Email your lawmakers

Living organ donation saves lives. More than 103,000 people are currently awaiting a transplant, with 2,145 people on the kidney transplant waiting list from Michigan alone. Thanks to advocates like you, Michigan has made strides to reduce barriers to living organ donation, like protecting donors from insurance discrimination, but more can be done. Employers can expand their medical leave policies, and SB 887 encourages just that by creating a tax credit program for businesses and organizations that allows people to take medical leave associated with donating an organ.

Making the decision to donate an organ is a life-changing choice made easier with support. Currently, an organ donor's medical costs are covered by the recipient's insurance, but this does not include non-medical costs like transportation or time off from work for tests, surgery, and recovery. Sen. Kevin Hertel filed SB 887 to establish a tax credit for employers who include organ donation in their medical leave policies.

Medical leave should not decide if someone can donate life. Will you email your legislators in support of SB 887 and the tax credit for organ and bone marrow donation?
