Chronic kidney disease-associated pruritus (CKD-aP), also known as itchy skin, is a common symptom for people living with chronic kidney disease, especially people on dialysis. The constant feeling of itchy skin that is not relieved by scratching can be very distressing.  Over time, it can affect your mental health and lead to feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety Even though doctors do not fully understand what causes pruritus, you can work with your doctor and others on your health care team to find the right treatment option for you.

Shayan Shirazian, M.D.

Shayan Shirazian, M.D.

Dr. Shayan Shirazian received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Brown University and did his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He spent 7 years at NYU-Winthrop Hospital where he was the fellowship program director and the director of nephrology clinical trials before being recruited back to Columbia. Dr. Shirazian is currently an associate professor of medicine in nephrology and a director of home dialysis at Columbia University Medical Center. His research aims to test and implement interventions to improve quality of life and self-care in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). To this end, he has been the investigator on several studies that have examined the treatment of CKDassociated pruritus (CKD-aP) in patients with ESKD.
