Vital Kidney Disease Education and Treatment Reforms are at Stake

Congress is currently considering the most significant changes to Medicare’s End Stage Renal Disease Program in a decade.  The American Kidney Fund strongly supports a number of positive changes in the proposed ESRD package designed to raise awareness of kidney disease and educate patients and their families about treatment options.

Included in the package are Chronic Kidney Disease Demonstration Projects that would increase public awareness about kidney disease and promote greater understanding of risk factors and healthy behaviors.

Expanded Medicare counseling provisions are also included to empower kidney disease patients with necessary information to manage their illness and slow the progression of the disease. Proposed reforms would provide Medicare coverage for up to six educational sessions for beneficiaries approaching the need for dialysis.
